Taiwan Tuk Tuk

[05] Here comes your taxi cab to Taiwan, where we are going to spend our Sunday AfterLOOM today!

After a short stopover in the borderland of Thailand/Myanmar, we are going to take one of those Tuk Tuks to Taiwan, gets cheaper! Here we are going to meet the older brothers and ancestors of these vehicles: the foot-braced space warpers. Join our tour to Taiwan and hook on!

Box Loom

The precious model of this box loom type is made by a trunk from camphor wood, while modern versions come like this. The early birds of this foot loom serie from Taiwan have been made by huge bamboo canes of 20 cm and more in diameter. Next Sunday AfterLOOM we are going to present you one of those cane models. The leading of the warp gets triangular-shaped, similar to the Bhutanese loin looms, even it‘s smaller in size.

Another comfort of this type of advanced foot loom is the fact the warp box rests on the floor. The shape of the box and the leading of the warp gives you a stable feeling to your workpiece.

Nowadays the box is used to store the warp inside, in early times they may be used for sound purpose either. It seems there is an relation between gong-styled batten rests of Indonesia and this box, that relates to later cultural expressions.

The original trunk version of the Box loom of the Atayal people on Taiwan shows out, that they positioned the cultural state of art to build boats by wooden trunks into their loom, taking the functional position of the warp beam. A method we can observe with many of the ethnic loin loom cultures. Cultural expression by a loom as a sculpture. It reminds us the serious question, if weaving culture bases really on settlement of humans? - Opposite, doesn‘t settlement base on the insight of a self-made concept of a woven world?

Decide by yourself: Isn‘t this the essence of a sculptural artwork with concept to carry a (cultural) message over generations? And/or are these just some simple tools for backstrap weaving to produce some warming garments?

The warp on this Taiwanese-style foot-loom is a Karen-like pattern, they use often for their typical bags. You see, the whole thing is an intercultural experiment! You may also recognize the great thing, that goes along with a loin loom: In most cases the warp can easily be switched from one to the other loom!
