A collection of videos of ethnological sciene on loin Looms (known as backstrap looms or hip looms) and other asian looms of interest, with a focus on "Austronesian" loin loom types and the continentally orientated, somehow related "Austroasiatic" , i. e.: Bhutan Loom, Karen Loom, Katu Foot Loom, Mizo Loom, Chakma Loom, ....

In our playlists about the different ethnic or national sorted types of loin looms, we may do the mistake to define them all as Austronesian, but that's more a keyword for average user than ethnological fact. Our focus in this collection of videos on loin looms is mainly on the formal design and functions of the loin loom, rather than on the ethnological purpose.  But so far:

The Austronesian group is located about 3.000 years ago on the Chinese coastline above Taiwan, all along the Yangtze. This group is called by science Austronesian because of their historical continouing expansion from the mainland onto the Pacific and Southeast Asian island world (ISEA): Taiwan/Hainan - Philippines - Closer Pacific Islands - Indonesia - ....

Some of these so-called Austronesian groups came back later to the mainland, i. e. the Cham people of Vietnam/Champa.

The Austro-asiatic group also came up on the nowadays Chinese mainland, someway how neighbours of the Austronesian group. They located more westwards on inner mainland. This group(s) moved on southwards to Himalayan area , to spread all over the Himalaya, from Yunnan to Nepal. In later periods they spread over the Southeast Asian mainland and parts of Northeast India and its neighbourhood (Khmer). Some of them may have reach the island world (ISEA) and cumulated with them, but most influence of this group kept on mainland.

There may be other groups in East and Southeast Asia using a loin loom, but not fitting in one of both groups, but these are the two main groups. There are also several loom types as the Chinese half-frames, that don't belong in one of both, but they base on them.

Island Looms (Austronesian Looms):

Aceh Loom, Palembang Loom, Baduy Loom, Sikka Loom, Bali Loom, Java Loom, Borneo Dayak Loom, Atayal Box Loom, Banjuwangi Loom, Gorontalo Loom, ....

Other Austronesian frame looms of interest: Minang Kabau Loom, Malay Loom, Thai Box Loom, Cambodian Mat Loom, Malagasy Loom, Sobei Loom,......

The early birds among these loin looms are the type of foot looms (foot-braced, body-tensioned hand looms with circular warp), which are at least more than 5.000 years old, as we know from excavations in Yuhang (Liangzhu Culture) and Shizhaishan, China.

In following times the loom principally didn't change that much, but the loom got connected externally by the support of poles, trees or pillars (externally-braced, body-tensioned handlooms with circular warp).

By the time of Javanization a kind of mobile station came up in Indonesia and got added to the basic loom, what enables wider warps and a bit of flexability. We call these looms "station looms" to differ from the previous "stake looms". In that time the Malayan frame looms and the songkhet weaving had a strong impact on the Indonesian loin looms, what brought up a new type of loin loom: the externally-braced, body-tensioned handloom with a flat warp. But that isn't all, the story goes on......
